"I'll keep you safe." Daddy said to me as he swept me from my feet.
I clung to him as tightly as I could. Trusting that he would indeed keep to his word. I look back at my mothers corpse, the metal pole still pinning her head to the floor as she lay motionless once again.
Daddy rushes down the stairs taking them two at a time not wasting a second, the treads creak under the stress. We reach the bottom and turn left towards the kitchen. I can see out of the window, the terrifying sight of hundreds of the monsters, all clawing at the glass trying to get into the house.
"Don't look out there sweetie." Daddy whispered soothingly. I trust him, he will keep me safe, I am sure of it.
He takes us to the back side of the house. Into the dining room, opening a drawer one handed whilst still holding me and removing a steak knife. He had not been in the house for years but somehow he knew where everything was.
We hear a growling noise. I tense up in my fathers arms as I see my mothers girlfriend or what was a monster in her body eating the remains of Gumbo our family black Labrador. She hasn't noticed us just yet.
My father puts me down onto the floor.
"Stay back, stay safe." He instructs me. I am trying not to cry, I know what he has to do. "It's OK," He comforts me, putting a hand on my shoulder. "That is not your Auntie Allison any more."
I nodded, I understood what he meant but it did not stop the hurt I was going to feel inside. He tiptoed up to her, the steak knife drawn. She began to move, noticing him or feeling his presence somehow. She turned to face him as he plunged the knife through her eye and into the brain, stopping the monster.
A tear trickles down my face and Daddy returns to wipe it away. He had to do it, he had to keep me safe.
He says no more, He scoops me back up carrying me through the conservatory and towards the back door. I can see at the bottom of the garden behind the fence, the gate was open. Daddy's car was sitting there waiting for us. I knew then I was going to be OK, I was going to be safe.
